Various countries claim to have been the first to have invented it, and in the 1930s a number of countries were working on radar for military purposes. Robert Watson-Watts (1892-1973) is widely regarded as the inventor of a large-scale practical system, which he patented in April 1935 (British patent). He played a key role in setting up an early warning system, round Britain, of approaching enemy aircraft.
